The short version
While a poll is open, the bot stores which option you picked, tied to your Discord user ID. It has to, or it cannot count your vote or stop you voting twice. Nothing in Discord shows that to anyone. When the poll closes, the individual votes are deleted and only the totals are kept.
So the honest summary is: secret from everyone in Discord, permanently, and stored for as long as the poll runs. The terms cover the one case where that stored copy could ever be handed over.
While a poll is open
For each vote cast, the bot saves:
- Your Discord user ID
- The option you picked
- Which poll it belongs to
Your user ID is a number Discord gives you. It is not your name, your email, or your IP address, though anyone with it can look up which account it belongs to.
The poll itself is also stored: the question, the options, which server and channel it is in, and who started it.
When a poll closes
The individual votes are deleted. What stays is the poll, its options, and the count for each one. After that point there is no stored record of how any specific person voted, and no way to work it out from what is left.
What is never stored
- Your username, display name or avatar
- Your email address or IP address
- Messages, in any channel, at any time
- Anything at all from a channel with no poll in it
Who else sees it
Discord does, because all of this happens on Discord. Their privacy policy covers that part.
Beyond Discord, nobody. There is no analytics, no advertising, no third-party service, and nothing is sold or shared. The bot runs on hardware I own.
Deleting your data
Finish or close the poll, and the individual votes go with it. Remove the bot from the server and its polls and their votes go too.
If you want your vote removed from a poll that is still running, ask in the support Discord or email [email protected]. Be aware that asking means telling me which poll you voted in, and removing one vote changes a count that other people can see.
Children
Secret Polling is not for anyone below Discord's minimum age for their country. I do not knowingly collect anything from children. The only thing stored about any voter is a user ID and an option number, for anyone of any age.
Security
The bot's token and its database sit on a machine I control and are not shared. The shortest honest statement about the vote data is that it exists for the life of a poll and not after it, which is the main thing keeping it safe. If something ever does go wrong in a way that affects you, I will say so in the support server.
Changes
If the bot ever starts keeping something new, or keeping it for longer, this page changes before that happens and I will post about it in the support server. The date at the top is the version you are reading.
