The short version

InterServer passes messages from one linked channel to the other. It does not keep them. The only things saved to disk are the IDs it needs to know which channels are linked to which. No message text, no attachments, no logs of who said what.

That said, the messages themselves are still going somewhere. Read the next section.

Where your messages go

When you post in a linked channel, InterServer reads that message and reposts it in the channel on the other side. Everyone who can read that channel can read your message, including people in a server you are not in, cannot see, and have no account on. Your server's permissions do not apply over there.

Treat a linked channel as public. If you would not want a stranger reading it, do not post it in one.

Once a message has been reposted in the other server, that copy belongs to that server, not to me. I cannot un-send it, and unlinking the channels later does not remove it.

What gets stored

The bot saves what it needs to keep links working, and nothing else:

  • The Discord server (guild) ID of each server the bot is in
  • The Discord IDs of the channels in a link, and which channel is linked to which
  • The Discord User ID of whoever creates and joins the connections
  • Settings you set for a link, if any
  • The webhook ID and token that the bot makes and uses for the relay

These are numbers Discord hands out. They are not names, emails, or IP addresses.

What does not get stored

  • Message text
  • Images, files, or any other attachment
  • Who posted what, or when
  • Usernames, display names, avatars, or user IDs
  • Direct messages
  • Anything from a channel that is not linked

A message exists in the bot's memory for as long as it takes to send it to the other channel, and then it is gone. Nothing is written down and there is no archive to hand over, subpoena, or leak.

Who else sees it

Discord does, because everything here happens on Discord. Their privacy policy covers that part and is worth reading.

Beyond Discord, nobody. There is no analytics, no advertising, no third-party service, and nothing is sold or shared. The bot runs on hardware I own.

Deleting your data

Unlink the channel, or remove the bot from the server. The stored link is deleted and the bot stops reading the channel. Since message content was never stored, there is nothing else to delete.

To confirm nothing of yours is left, email [email protected] from a contact I can tie to the server, or ask in the support Discord.

What I cannot delete is a message that already got reposted into somebody else's server. Ask that server's staff to remove it.

Children

InterServer is not for anyone below Discord's minimum age for their country. I do not knowingly collect anything from children, and since the bot does not store personal data at all, there is nothing held on anyone of any age. If you think a child is posting in a linked channel, that is a moderation matter for the server they are in.

Security

The less that is kept, the less there is to lose. The bot's token and its list of links sit on a machine I control and are not shared. If something ever does go wrong in a way that affects you, I will say so in the support server.

Changes

If the bot ever starts storing something new, this page changes before that happens, and I will post about it in the support server. The date at the top is the version you are reading.
